Literature Text

On dark, dreary days,
or in the pitch black of night,
travel with caution,
and keep your path alight.

For it is at those hours,
when the sun is out of sight
that the spirits of the dead
arise from their coffins tight.

But the most mysterious of all,
of whose visage I now write,
is a woman in the wild,
whose dress is pale and bright.

She appears innocent and alluring,
gives no cause for fright,
and feigns a damsel in distress,
seems to lament past plight.

Many have given in,
tried to help her despite
the chill running down their spines
at her icy touch, only slight.

All souls who follow
in her ghastly tempting light
never return to the world,
their bodies torn outright.

Her rage at her children’s loss,
her scorn and sorrow’s might,
are akin to the flames of Hell
which for your soul she will ignite.

So I now tell you be wary
when the moon is at its height
to watch for her appearance
lest your life be whisked from sight.

God have mercy on those who see
The Woman dressed in White.
A poem inspired by Adrian von Ziegler's song, "White Specter". A link to the song is below.
There have always been tales of the spirits of a woman dressed in white haunting the world, usually centered around an abused wife or mother who faced some horrible tragedy. Sometimes she mourns a lost husband or love, sometimes she laments the loss of her children. The stories vary, but they are nonetheless gripping. So I wondered what sort of campfire story-like poem could be made from this. And here it is.
Hope you like it!
